Psychiatric report ordered in murder case

A PSYCHIATRIC report has been ordered for a 28-year-old man charged yesterday with the murder of a Cork father-of-five.

Alex Freiberg of 112 Bridgewater House, Clonmel, appeared in court yesterday evening on a charge of murdering Kieran Cambridge at 69 Carrigeen Close, Clonmel, early on Sunday morning, September 16.

Detective Sergeant Michael Hennebry gave evidence that, at 1.05 yesterday, he arrested and charged Mr Freiberg.

After caution, the accused made no reply, the sergeant said.

Solicitor for the accused, Peter Reilly, said that his client wasn’t working and was on disability benefit. He applied for legal aid and, after agreement from the State, this request was acceded to by Judge Terence Finn.

Mr Finn said that, given the nature of the charge, he was precluded from considering the question of bail.

Inspector Kevin Bowen of Clonmel Garda Station applied to have Mr Freiberg remanded in custody, to appear in Carrick-on-Suir district court this Thursday. The date proved suitable and the remand was ordered by the judge.

Mr Reilly asked the court to recommend that “all appropriate medical treatment” be given to the accused while he was in custody. “I would also ask you to direct a psychiatric assessment and report.”

Judge Finn agreed to direct the preparation of a psychiatric report and also made a general direction regarding appropriate medical treatment.

Mr Freiberg did not speak during yesterday’s court hearing and was dressed casually in trainers, grey tracksuit bottoms and a blue hoodie-style top.
