DOCTORS have been urged to report suspected cases of female genital mutilation (FGM) being carried out in Ireland to authorities.

The Irish Medical Organisation request to doctors comes as concern grows that measures to prevent female genital mutilation in Britain may see an increase in the practice being performed here.

Estimates of the number of girls and women who have undergone genital mutilation stand at between 100 and 140 million worldwide, and a further two million girls are at risk of undergoing the illegal procedure each year.
