LAST month was the wettest August in 10 years in some parts of the country, forecasters said yesterday.

Met Éireann said that, like June and July, rainfall totals in August were above normal over the eastern half of the country.

Birr, which had the highest rainfall of 145mm, had its wettest August since 1997. Highest daily rainfall was also recorded at Birr, where 41mm fell on the 11th, its highest daily fall for August since 1984.
