Man stabbed and beaten at front door

A 27-YEAR-OLD Polish man was stabbed and beaten with baseball bats when he went to answer a knock at his front door.

Despite his injuries he refused to let gardaí take him to hospital, but later on he sought medical attention himself.

The attack happened when the man opened the front door of his rented house at Willow Grove Estate, on the western side of Ballincollig.

Superintendent Con Cadogan said that eight people had called to the house and they were armed with baseball bats.

They were not wearing balaclavas.

It is believed that one of the attackers was carrying a knife and stabbed the Polish man in the back, although the wound was not very serious. The incident happened at around 11pm on Thursday. The man’s partner, her child and another woman were also in the house at the time. None of them were injured.

Supt Cadogan said that a brick was also thrown through the front window of the house.

Three nights earlier the man’s car had been set on fire and gardaí believe it may be connected to Thursday night’s attack.

The victim had been living in Ballincollig for a couple of months and prior to that had been staying in Co Kerry.

Supt Cadogan said gardaí were anxious to speak to anybody who may have seen the attack. Anybody with information is asked to contact Ballincollig Garda Station at 021 4871222.
