THE group representing one-third of the country’s second level schools has supported the possibility of holding Leaving Certificate exams on a Saturday in May, despite opposition from counterparts in the majority of schools.

The Irish Vocational Education Association (IVEA) represents the 33 city and county Vocational Education Committees (VECs) which manage one-third of the country’s 740 second level schools, with almost 100,000 students.

The management groups representing the larger religious-owned secondary sector and the community and comprehensive school group have stated their opposition to Saturday opening of schools for exams.
