US situation in Iraq ‘akin to British army’s in the North’

THE US situation in Iraq is beginning to resemble the 38-year quagmire in which the British army found itself in the North, a former member of the US military has warned.

The two situations have “eerie” parallels, Bob Martin wrote in a column in the Philadelphia Inquirer, a highly respected newspaper.

The story of the British army in the North offers a “message about what happens to superpowers when they seek to fight wars on terrorism in heavily divided lands”, he said.
