Plan ahead: widespread congestion expected

DRIVERS have been advised to plan ahead with chronic traffic jams predicted on what is set to be the busiest weekend of the year.

The AA has identified a host of major events which will add to the traditional tailbacks for the August Bank Holiday weekend.

Tens of thousands of GAA fans are expected to travel to Dublin, racing enthusiasts to Galway, music lovers to Portlaoise and culture buffs to Waterford.

This is on top of a mass migration of people to seaside resorts and holiday homes.

AA Roadwatch controller Nicola Hudson said drivers can expect congestion along every one of the country’s major road arteries.

“Before you leave home check out full details of all events, road closures, rail restrictions and traffic jams available on the AA Roadwatch website and on radio bulletins throughout the day,” she said.

“Major festivals like the Galway Races and the World Fleadh in Portlaoise to name but a few are expected to attract thousands.”

With August traditionally one of the worst weekends for road deaths, she said people should take every precaution to stay alert.

“The best advice is to take it easy, respect speed limits and do not try to make up time lost in the tailbacks on the open road,” Ms Hudson said.
