‘Filthy’ Louth hospital bottom of online survey

OUR LADY of Lourdes hospital in Drogheda was described as “filthy” with “toilets often blocked for long hours”, according to an online survey of hospital cleanliness standards.

The survey found that the Co Louth hospital was the dirtiest hospital in the country and Mallow General Hospital in Co Cork the cleanest.

The Health Service Executive (HSE) has refused to acknowledge the irishhealth.com survey — to which 8,000 internet users contributed — saying it uses its own audit results to gauge hospital hygiene standards.

The survey was carried out over nine months. Hospitals were given a percentage rating based on the overall scores.

About 200 comments were made about each of the country’s 50 hospitals.

According to Irishhealth.com publisher John Gibbons: “Comments about Our Lady of Lourdes were consistently poor since day one.”

Referring to the Co Louth hospital, one contributor said: “Hygiene in the hospital was very poor. Toilet facilities totally inadequate. Toilets often blocked for long periods. Staff response to buzzers from infirm patients very slow (10 minutes).”

Another made the comment: “Not surprised the winter vomiting bug is in the hospital. In A&E from 6pm till 2am, both adults and children were getting sick on the floors and in the toilets and not once did anybody come along and wash the floors or clean the toilets. Why do they not employ 24-hour cleaning staff?”

Another reads: “Hospital was filthy. My son got sick on the floor and the nurse stood and watched me clean it with tissues. No mop was taken in to disinfect the floor. Bins were not emptied all day and there were dirty nappies in them.”

In contrast, describing time spent at Mallow General Hospital, a patient said: “The quality of care in Mallow exceeds that of any private hospital I have been a patient in or had to visit. They left no stone unturned.

“The only downside is there is no gynaecology care and so far I am waiting 10 months for an appointment to be scheduled for follow-up care with a consultant”.

According to irishhealth.com, the Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda scored an average of 48% from the 369 people who posted comments about it while Mallow scored an average of 84% among the 49 people who completed surveys. lFor further information, log onto www.irishhealth.com and www.ratemyhospital.ie
