Centre cheers decades saving donkeys
It was 20 years to the day since a local rescue centre operated by Paddy Barrett and his family was formally linked with the Donkey Sanctuary founded and administered in Devon by Dr Elisabeth Svendsen.
During the two decades that have since elapsed, some 2,500 neglected and ill-treated donkeys have been rescued and rehabilitated at the sanctuary in the rolling north Cork countryside. Today, the 100-acre centre, which has a full-time staff of 45, with veterinary, welfare and other expertise, has 430 contented animals on site and another 550 out in foster homes.
