Fixed net kills shark

THE basking shark found on a beach near Castlegregory, Co Kerry, earlier this week, above, died in a fixed net, the SWRFB said yesterday.

Board manager Aidan Barry said board officers were satisfied the illegal net involved was not being used by a salmon fishing boat.

Last year, drift nets were banned and Mr Barry said fixed nets were also illegal.

Jerome Dowling, of the Kerry Angling Federation, was adamant that the net was a drift net.

A spokesman for drift net fishermen insisted that the net was not being used as a drift net.
