POPULATION statistics published last week prove the need for a university in the south-east, according to campaigners.

An ongoing lobby to have Waterford Institute of Technology upgraded to university status has been boosted by census figures, which show a high skill level in the region and a large appetite for third- and fourth-level education.

The figures also show that Co Waterford has become one of the country’s most popular choices to work and live, according to county manager Ray O’Dwyer.
