A RETURN to the Department of Education for Mary Hanafin could lead to a stand-off with school managers and teachers over the timetabling of Leaving Certificate exams.

The debate was reignited yesterday as most of this year’s 52,021 Leaving Certificate students faced into more than six hours of writing yesterday with two English papers.

It was also the first day of exams for the 57,883 Junior Certificate candidates and 3,132 students doing Leaving Certificate Applied.
