A TRANSSEXUAL woman, with a confirmed gender identity disorder, has been given permission for a name change on her State exams — which she had sat as a schoolboy.

The State Examinations Commission has agreed to change the name and gender of the woman on her official Leaving Certificate and Group Intermediate Certificate.

The landmark decision, welcomed by the Equality Authority, followed a request by the complainant who was registered at birth as a male, but who is undergoing treatment after being diagnosed with gender identity disorder.
