Body of missing man found in remote area

THE death of a man who had been the subject of a search in Co Cork over the past week is not believed to have been suspicious, gardaí said last night.

The body found in a remote part of west Cork yesterday afternoon was identified last night as that of Alan Lyons from Thurles, Co Tipperary.

The 25-year-old had been reported missing a week earlier, after going to visit friends in the area.

His family had been increasingly concerned as the young diabetic man had left home without his insulin medication.

Around 300 people, including gardaí, Coast Guard and civil defence members and members of the public, had searched an area of Co Cork around Dunmanway as fears for his safety grew during the past week.

At around 1.15pm yesterday, a search group discovered a body in the Coolmountain area, about six miles outside Dunmanway.

The remains were taken to Cork University Hospital yesterday afternoon.

A post mortem examination to determine the cause of his death is expected to be carried out at the hospital today by the Assistant State Pathologist, Dr Margaret Bolster.

Mr Lyons was last reported seen alive, walking in the Moneyreague area of Dunmanway at about 11.30am last Sunday week.

He had been to a party with friends in the area over the weekend.
