Charity award for Irish Examiner

INCLUSION Ireland has presented the Irish Examiner with an award to recognise its coverage of issues for people with intellectual disabilities.

The charity made the presentation at its annual general meeting in Cork city on Saturday.

The paper was nominated by Inclusion Ireland board members Katherine O’Leary and Rosaleen Hyland.

They said the newspaper’s coverage of issues for people with intellectual disabilities in a fair and consistent way.

“It has a long history of promoting and reporting on the cause of people with disabilities and was at the forefront of all the national coverage of the campaign on the need for rights-based disability legislation.

“Its journalists have courageously reported on issues such as the lack standards for disability services, illegal charging, the appalling conditions in psychiatric hospitals in a sympathetic and non-sensational way,” they said.

Editor of the Irish Examiner Tim Vaughan collected the award.
