Two die as road death toll exceeds 100

THE number of people killed on Ireland’s roads in 2007 passed 100 yesterday with the deaths of two young men in a single vehicle accident in Co Clare.

The men died after the van in which they were travelling struck a ditch and crashed into a field shortly before 5am at Goldburn Bridge on the main Ennis to Kilrush road. Two otheroccupants of the van were also injured, one critically.

The two men killed were named locally as Shane Donellan, aged 17, from Killimer and 21-year-old Eoin Glynn from Miltown Malbay. They were pronounced dead at the scene while the two other men were rushed to Ennis General Hospital. One was later transferred to the Mid-Western Regional Hospital in Limerick for further treatment. His condition was described last night as critical.
