Rising remembered with ceremonies in town
Mayor Jerry Mullally led the tributes which involved a parade from the Courthouse to St Mary’s Church.
The Defence Forces provided a Colour Party and the Thomas Davis Pipe Band and Civil Defence took part.
Fianna Fáil marked the anniversary with the laying of wreaths at the National Monument on Mallow Bridge by Tom Leech and at the Republican Plot in Gouldshill Cemetery by Michael Meade.
Anne Scully recited a decade of the Rosary in Irish at both locations while Ned O’Keeffe, TD, delivered an oration at the Republican Plot where Cllr Dan Joe Fitzgerald presided.
Adrian Long recited the 1916 Proclamation and Pat Healy played the pipes.
The oration at a Sinn Féin commemoration, held at the Republican Plot, was delivered by the party’s Cork East general election candidate Cllr Sandra McLellan, Youghal, with Cllr Willie O’Regan, Mallow, presiding and Cllr Michelle Hennessy, Youghal, in attendance.
Piper Healy and two drummers, Michael McCarthy and David O’Donoghue took part in a parade.
Wreaths were laid at the Republican Plot by Martin Mullane, Sheila O’Sullivan and Melissa Mullane, who also read the 1916 Proclamation, while David O’Mahony delivered the Easter Message.
