A YOUNG man awaiting trial for the murder of a pensioner was found dead yesterday morning in Midlands Prison.

Murder accused found dead in jail

The inmate’s death is thought to be the second drug-related fatality in the jail in the last three months. The 22-year-old was named yesterday as Gerard Cullen-Brady, from Clondalkin, west Dublin.

Prison staff representatives yesterday expressed concern at the drugs problem in the jail and have sought a meeting with prison service management.

Cullen-Brady was serving 15 months in jail for theft offences. He was charged with the murder of Vincent Plunkett, aged 80, on Cork Street, Dublin, last August and was awaiting trial.

Cullen-Brady was found in his cell yesterday morning. Prison sources said foul play was not suspected and that the death was thought to be the result of a drug overdose.

Sources in the jail claim inmates, who are members of a Limerick criminal gang, are allowed Sunday visits.

There was no response to queries from the prison service yesterday.
