AFTER 14 years of waiting, three psychiatric nurses seriously injured in a knife attack by a patient are finally to receive compensation.

The Labour Court has recommended that psychiatric nurses are entitled to be assessed and, where appropriate, compensated for physical and psychological trauma following an assault at work.

In 1993, Kevin Kelly and his two colleagues were trying to escort a schizophrenic patient from his home in Dublin to St Ita’s Hospital when the patient stabbed them.
