Cigarette butts, chewing gum account for 73% of street rubbish

CIGARETTE butts account for 41% of all litter on the streets of this country, but the Government is determined that businesses will do their part to stamp out the problem.

That is according to Minister of State at the Department of the Environment Batt O’Keeffe who was speaking at the Sherkin Island Marine Station’s 23rd Annual conference.

The advent of the smoking ban has meant more and more people are forced outside for their nicotine fix. “Unfortunately where people do tend to congregate, we have more and more cigarettes,” said the Minister.
