Contraband seizures total €17m for 2006

MORE than €17 million worth of drugs and other contraband were seized at Ireland’s airports and ports last year.

New figures show that customs officers made more than 3,600 seizures of illicit goods in 2006, including:

720kgs of drugs in 1,160 seizures, with an estimated street value of €8.5m
