CALLS for an expanded out-of-hours service grew yesterday following evidence of a rise in the number of children deemed “homeless” by the Health Service Executive (HSE).

Yesterday it emerged Garda Commissioner Noel Conroy has contacted the HSE to express frustration at the out-of-hours service.

Social workers have noted gardaí are sometimes placed in the role of “babysitters” when children present themselves at garda stations at weekends or nighttime.
