Skip boss to pay for restoration of dump

THE man at the centre of a major illegal dumping probe is facing a massive clean-up bill.

David Greenwood, the operator of Greenwood Skip Hire, was yesterday given two weeks to engage consultants who must present Cork County Council with his plans for the restoration of the suspected illegal dump site in Sarsfield Court in Glanmire.

While the site — estimated to be between four and five acres — contains mainly construction material, initial inspections have also uncovered household waste. There are fears there could be tens of thousands of tonnes of material dumped there.

Mr Greenwood’s consultants must assess the site and discuss remedial proposals with us, a council spokesperson said.

He has 14 days to submit those details and if he doesn’t comply, the council will move in and restore the site and recoup the costs from Mr Greenwood, she said.

The site was sealed off by gardaí and officials from the council’s environmental enforcement department on Thursday after they secured a warrant ordering the skip hire company to cease trading. Mr Greenwood does not have a licence to collect waste.

The council is also pursuing the company through the courts under section 14 of the Waste Management Act. The site was shut down nearly four years after residents first complained of dumping activity.
