Arrest in Saulite investigation

GARDAÍ investigating the brutal shooting dead of a Latvian mother yesterday arrested a man suspected of possessing a gun the night the mother-of-two was killed.

This brings to eight the number of people questioned in connection with the murder of 28-year-old Baiba Saulite.

Senior detectives say they are making “steady progress” in the investigation.

The Irish man was taken from his north Dublin home at 9am. He was arrested on suspicion of unlawfully being in possession of a firearm and ammunition with intent to endanger life at Holywell Square, Swords, on November 19 last, the evening Ms Saulite was shot at her home.

He was yesterday being held at Coolock garda station under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act and can be held by gardaí for up to 72 hours.

Two Lebanese men were arrested in December 5 on suspicion of having information on the killing.

Another Lebanese man on December 18 was taken into custody for the same reason.

A large file on the case is being compiled for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
