THE most popular makes of cars on the Irish market are not as safe as they could be, according to consumer champions.

Britain’s Which? organisation tested dozens of cars and found just three of 28 small family cars met its recommended mark of 10 points for safety.

Among those below the Which? magazine’s 10-point score were the Toyota Yaris, Opel Corsa, Ford Fiesta, Skoda Fabia and VW Polo.
