SWEEPING new housing laws are being proposed in the wake of growing complaints about management companies which oversee apartment blocks.

The Law Reform Commission (LRC) will today unveil plans for a Government regulator to oversee the companies, which charge residents for cleaning and maintaining communal areas like hallways, gardens and paths.

Admitting the law has failed to keep pace with Ireland’s booming market for flats, the LRC is calling for greater protection for consumers, a complaints body and criminal prosecutions against rogue developers.
