THE AA has given a guarded welcome to government plans to make drink drivers re-sit the driving test, but is concerned that the testing system is already overloaded.

Transport Minister Martin Cullen and the Road Safety Authority are examining a proposal that would make it compulsory for anyone with a drink-driving conviction to take the driving test again.

The proposal is being considered for inclusion in the new road safety strategy, due to be published early next year.
