SOCIAL Welfare Minister Seamus Brennan has been given until spring to bring equality to pension payments or face a significant legal challenge.

The National Women’s Council (NWCI) yesterday decided to hold off on a court case against the treatment of tens of thousands of women who are categorised as dependent adults for welfare payments.

It remains concerned these women are at the mercy of their husband’s pension and are left exposed to poverty within relationships.
