16,000 pensioners suffer ‘fuel poverty’

SOME 16,300 pensioners are experiencing “fuel poverty”, where more than 10% of household income is spent on keeping the home warm.

The figure was released yesterday by Age Action Ireland as it prepared to launch its new Stay Well and Warm campaign.

As part of the campaign, which will be launched today, older people have been urged to take the necessary steps to stay warm this winter.

A total of 40,000 information packs are being made available to the public and contain an information booklet, temperature card and useful contact numbers.

Between 1,500 and 2,000 more deaths occur during the winter in Ireland, than during the summer. The cold weather, inadequate heating and poorly insulated homes are contributory factors in some of these deaths.

Research has found that when temperatures fall below 16C there is an increased risk of respiratory problems. Where it drops below 12C, there is an increased risk of stroke and heart attack.

“We are urging older people to ensure their homes are adequately heated this winter,” Age Action chief executive officer Robin Webster said.

“By taking basic steps, older people can ensure they stay well during the coming months.”

As part of the radio and television campaign, relatives, neighbours and friends of older people are encouraged to keep in regular contact with them.

In addition to keeping their homes comfortably heated, older people can take the following steps:

*Wear layers, rather than one thick layer of clothing; remain active.

*Don’t stay sitting for long periods, spread your chores throughout the day to keep moving and exercise daily but avoid risks in wet/icy conditions.

*Get the flu jab.

*Eat well — have at least one hot meal a day; sip hot drinks regularly; keep a flask of hot drink by the bed.

*Stock up on provisions in case there is icy weather and you cannot go out.

*Seal gaps around windows and doors.
