A man in his 20s was still being questioned by gardaí last night in connection with murder of drug addict, Thomas Moran, 26.

He was shot once in the head.

One theory being followed by gardaí is that he may have fallen foul of a drug supplier after he tried to break into his house to get heroin for a fix.

Mr Moran had housebreaking convictions, which he carried out to pay for heroin.

His body was discovered at around 1am on Monday on open ground in Ashe Avenue, John Carey Park.

The body was found after the emergency services were called to a fire in Carey Park.

Subsequently, the army bomb disposal team were called to the scene when what was thought to be an explosive device was found.

This turned out to be a box of fireworks.

The man arrested yesterday is being held under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.

Meanwhile, a major murder investigation is ongoing into the brutal stabbing of Croom bachelor, Liam O’Donovan over a week ago.

He was attacked in his home at St Sennan’s Terrace after at least one intruder broke into his house by getting in through a rear window.

Hundreds of homes have been visited by gardaí and a knife which may have been the murder weapon has been sent to the state laboratory for forensic examination.

It was discovered in a wheelie bin located in the centre of the village.
