‘Waterford on Ice’ to attract 50,000 visitors
Waterford Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with Waterford City Council have secured a site for their outdoor ice rink as part of a €500,000 plan to make Waterford an even more popular shopping Mecca from December 8.
‘Waterford on Ice’ will be open to the public from the December 8 for a full month and will be located in the People’s Park, chamber chief executive, Monica Leech, yesterday confirmed.
The chamber is discussing the possibility of a park and ride service to ferry people to and from the city centre. In addition the ticket office for ‘Waterford on Ice’ will be located in the city centre to ensure that all visitors call there first.
“The People’s Park is going through a major revamp at the moment and will be complete by mid-November. It’s an ideal location for the rink from a safety and parking point of view.
“We are looking at a shuttle bus service and creating some sort of a Santa’s trail which would take people from the city towards the venue. Its all going to cost €500,000 and Waterford Chamber hopes to raise €50,000 of this.
“So far, our fundraising is well advanced and the goodwill from our members has been tremendous. Last year, the attraction drew 70,000 people to Limerick. So we hope it would draw at least 50,000 more visitors into our city,” Ms Leech added.
The ice rink would create up to 80 seasonal jobs.
