Tribunal awards former Elan employee €125,000 for unfair dismissal

PHARMACEUTICAL giant, Elan has been ordered to pay a former employee €125,000 after an Employment Appeals Tribunal ruled the company failed to follow proper disciplinary procedures in a decision to sack him.

Govind Basnet, a former IT director at the company’s facility in Athlone, Co Westmeath, won a case against Elan Pharma for unfair dismissal after the tribunal heard the sacking following alleged comments he made about a former colleague.

Mr Basnet of The Fairways, Monaleen, Castletroy, Co Limerick, joined Elan in 2001 and was responsible for a team of 18-25 employees.
