IRELAND will take command of one of the five UN peacekeeping zones in Kosovo from next year, it emerged last night.

Irish troops will lead the Multinational Task Force (Centre) which oversees the Pristina area, from August 2007 until July 2008.

Five other countries currently participate in this UN-mandated task force: Czech Republic, Slovakia, Sweden, Finland and Latvia.
