Bus strike is averted as minister promises 260 new vehicles

AFTER receiving assurances that an extra 260 buses will be provided, the National Bus and Rail Union yesterday called off its planned nationwide stoppage this evening.

The decision came after a meeting earlier in the day between the union and Transport Minister Martin Cullen.

NBRU Acting General Secretary Michael Faherty said the minister told them he would deliver 100 additional buses for the Dublin Bus fleet as promised last year and funding would also be available for the renewal of the Bus Eireann fleet by 160 vehicles.
