Samaritans warn students ‘don’t bottle it up’

THE Samaritans have warned Leaving Certificate students not to bottle up anxieties over their results which are due next Wednesday.

More than 55,300 students will be hoping to secure sufficient grades for 38,000 CAO places at colleges and universities, more than 20,000 Post Leaving Certificate (PLC) vacancies and 7,000 apprenticeships in the coming weeks.

The Samaritans said students will be experiencing several emotions which volunteers are trained to deal with.

Regional publicity officer Avril Halley said some students may feel guilty that they have not worked hard enough.

“Some may feel ashamed that they won’t get the results their peers or their parents or their teachers expect of them,” she said.

“Don’t bottle it up. If you can’t talk to your parents, if you can’t talk to your friends, if you can’t talk to your teachers, please talk to the Samaritans. We’re there by telephone and e-mail,” Ms Halley said

The Samaritans freephone number is not itemised on telephone bills and if callers do not have enough credit, they will be called back, with their permission.

Counselling students is part of the specific training given to Samaritans.

Exam grades can also be obtained by calling 1530 719 290 or, from outside Ireland, 00 353 1 2589001.

However, student’s examination number and PIN will be required.
