Jesuit church contents auctioned off

THE contents of Limerick’s Jesuit Church, which closed over two weeks ago, were auctioned off yesterday.

Auctioneer John Dunphy disposed of nearly 700 lots at his auction rooms in Sixmilebridge.

An Irish Regency Serving table fetched in excess of €30,000 and religious paintings by Limerick artist, Michael J Hartmann, also attracted strong bidding.

Other sales included a 10ft Victorian mahogany dining table which went for nearly €4,000.

A number of 19th century marble and plaster statues were also sold.

The Jesuits donated the contents of their main library to Mary Immaculate Teacher Training College.

As the Jesuit church is a protected structure, fixtures such as the altar, stain glass windows, shrines, mosaics and the organ must be retained.

Sacred objects such as chalices have been given to other churches in Limerick.
