FG proposal ‘will see people take law into own hands’

TAOISEACH Bertie Ahern yesterday warned Fine Gael’s bid to give householders greater rights to use violence against burglars could lead to people taking the law into their own hands.

Mr Ahern made the charge as he attacked opposition party proposals to radically shift the balance of proof in cases where intruders are tackled with force.

He said the moves could overturn the legal presumption of innocent until proven guilty.
