Anti-mast postcard campaign to target Ahern
Behind the campaign is a group from Glenbeigh, on the Ring of Kerry, which has already succeeded in getting Vodafone to drop plans for a proposed mast in the area.
However, local people are seriously concerned about plans for two other masts.
Clara Leahy, spokesperson for the Glenbeigh Residents’ Group, said they wanted to highlight their case at the highest level.
“This issue is really about health. People are very angry about plans to build a mast just 400 metres from a school at Curraheen being attended by 50 children,” she said.
The cards have been distributed to homes in the area, and the design shows a mast with a warning, Danger Radiation Risk — Glenbeigh says Stop and Think.
Cards being posted to Health Minister Mary Harney ask why she has ignored recommendations from the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Enterprise and Transport regarding emissions from telecommunications masts.
The group has already lobbied Tourism Minister John O’Donoghue, who lives in nearby Caherciveen.
Ms Leahy said the community was absolutely determined to resist further plans for masts in their area.
“We’re opposed to the random erection of these masts near our homes, school and play grounds without due consideration by the government and planning authorities of the health issues involved.”
