THERE was twice as many births registered in Ireland as deaths in 2005, according to the latest official figures.

It is the fourth year in a row that the total number of new-born babies is more than double the number of deaths as Ireland’s population continues to expand due to natural increase as much as immigration.

The population of the Republic is now estimated at 4,130,700 — up almost 87,000 over the last year.
