Richard ‘Happy’ Kelly, aged 17, has been missing since April 23 when he left his home in Southill at around 9.50pm.
He has been designated a Category A missing person. Inspector Gerry McNamara of Roxboro Road garda station said: “There is concern about him and that is why he is a Category A. Some people go missing on a regular basis, but in this case, Mr Kelly has just vanished. It is more serious than the ordinary missing person investigation. We have to keep in mind something could have happened to him”
Some garda sources believe Mr Kelly may have met a violent death at the hands of a south city crime gang.
Gardaí said he was not involved in drugs but was into joyriding.
On the night of his disappearance he was seen driving a stolen car which was later abandoned near Anacotty.
His distraught mother, Mary has renewed her plea for anybody with information about Richard to come forward.
She said: “You see this type of thing on the TV you think ‘that is awful what that family are going through’. But you never expect that it could happen your own son. I am living my worst nightmare. I have gone through hell and back and I don’t see any end in sight.”
Searches are continuing throughout the city and surrounding regions.
Insp McNamara said the garda sub aqua team are due shorty to resume searches of the River Maigue.
Mary Kelly said: “Somebody out there must know what happened my son. He cannot have disappeared off the face of the earth. All his stuff is still at home. When he went out that night, all he had were the clothes on his back and his mobile phone. Whoever knows what happened my son, could they contact the gardaí or me immediately and just say where he is.
When last seen he was wearing a navy Nike tracksuit with white stripe on the shoulders and at the ankles. He had Nike white classic runners and may also have been wearing a white top. He has two rings on his right hand as well as a bracelet on his right wrist.
Richard has a scar on the top right side of his head and a scar also on his right cheek. On his right lower arm he has a horseshoe tattoo with the initials HK.
Anyone who may have information on the whereabouts of Richard is asked to contact Roxboro Garda Station on 061-214340.
