Record number of beaches flying the Blue Flag

FARM and domestic waste that contributed to an algae build-up yesterday cost several inland bathing spots Blue Flag status.

However, a record number of internationally-acclaimed Blue Flags were awarded to Irish beaches for the 2006 season.

Most of the 81 beaches and three marinas that got the thumbs up were on the western seaboard with Kerry and Mayo each receiving 13 flags.
