State ignored warning since ’90s

SUCCESSIVE governments since 1990 had warnings of problems with the law surrounding statutory rape.

The Law Reform Commission published a report on child sexual abuse that year which recommended legislative changes.

In the report, the commission, an independent statutory body tasked with keeping the law under review, effectively saw last week’s Supreme Court judgment coming.
