Street teams pave way for warm welcome to Limerick

ANOTHER red-shirted team take to the streets of Limerick tomorrow to celebrate all that is good in the Treaty City.

Ten street ambassadors will promote visitor attractions, give out information and directions to tourists and promote the welcoming face of Limerick during the summer.

They include a woman who climbed 14,000ft up Mount Everest and a teenager who is sitting her Leaving Cert shortly.

They will work until the end of August.

The project, run by the Limerick Co-ordination Office, is the first of its kind in this country.

Limerick’s Mayor, Cllr Diarmuid Scully, said the ambassadors will play a major role in enhancing the image of the city.

One of the 10, Alice Culbert, is a 48-year-old from Corbally who got to 14,000ft on Everest last October for charity.

She said: “I enjoy a challenge and I am looking forward to helping visitors enjoy their visits to the city I love.”

The youngest member of the team is Rose Maher, 18, from Kocklong.

She combined studies for her Leaving Cert with ambassadorial training.

Rose said: “I wanted a summer job with a difference. Last year I worked as a hospital volunteer in India as I want to become a doctor. The street ambassador job will give me a chance to give something back to Limerick by helping tourists.”

Team leader Jean Ryan said: “Limerick has a lot of hidden gems and we hope to highlight them to visitors in their best possible light.”

The street ambassadors will pair off for shifts of 10am to 2pm and 2pm to 6pm each day except Sunday, when there will be one 2pm to 6pm shift.
