Drainage works to benefit thousands

WATER quality for thousands of householders across Waterford is set to improve with €50 million-plus of drainage works about to get underway in the region.

The project will necessitate major road works in the city.

Waterford City Council has signed contracts with Pierse Contracting Ltd for part of the second phase of the Waterford Main Drainage Scheme, which will see €56.5m spent on eight separate contracts.

The scheme will allow Waterford comply with EU directives and Irish legislation, and will also provide for quality of water going into the River Suir and the transfer of waste water to a treatment plant at Gorteens, Co Kilkenny.

The scheme will eliminate discharges of untreated waste water and the treatment plant will cater for projected domestic, commercial and industrial developments up to 2025. The plant will have capacity for expansion.

The scheme is also seen as essential to allow for sustainable development in the city and environs.

There will be a series of works in the Dunmore Road area to install interceptor pipelines beside the riverbank from Island View to Maypark.

Works will also be carried out at Glenville and Freshfields.

It will cover the construction of approximately 3.9km of gravity sewers and 1.8km of rising mains.
