THE Irish Examiner has been awarded the gold medal at Europe’s premier newspaper design awards.

Irish Examiner wins top prize for design

The newspaper’s front-page treatment of the end of the IRA’s armed struggle was awarded the top prize at the Society for News Design Scandinavia (SNDS) awards in Trondheim, Norway, last night.

The Irish Examiner also won an award of excellence for its front page of the July 7, 2005, London bombings at the ceremony.

Editor Tim Vaughan said this gold medal was further recognition of the paper’s trademark treatment of major news stories.

“Winning the top prize was a wonderful achievement for the newspaper and was deserved recognition of the exceptional creativity and design talent in the editorial team,” he said.

An award of excellence from the European Newspaper Awards will also be presented to the Irish Examiner at a ceremony next Tuesday in Vienna for its front-page coverage of the death of Pope John Paul II.

Later this year, the Irish Examiner will collect two further awards of excellence from the American Society of News Design — the Oscars of the industry.

The SNDS design award is the latest chapter in the Irish Examiner’s ongoing success story. In March, the Joint National Readership Survey (JNRS 2005) figures showed the paper had the highest growth of any Irish newspaper, with 260,000 daily readers — an increase of 18%.

Chief executive Tom Murphy said these awards are a very welcome recognition of excellence within the organisation and underline our commitment to produce quality newspapers.

“This gold medal achievement is a fitting reward for the hard work and creativity of everybody involved in The Irish Examiner and I would like publicly to acknowledge and thank everyone involved,” said Mr Murphy.
