THE CIRCUS owners who kept a monkey in squalid conditions without food or water should be prosecuted, an animal welfare group said last night.

The Captive Animals’ Protection Society called for an immediate investigation into how the animal came to be locked in a van in Co Laois for up to a week without food and water.

“While we hope that the animal recovers and those responsible for the callous treatment of the monkey will be prosecuted, the only way to stop further cruelty is to end the use of animals in circuses altogether,” said CAPS’ Craig Redmond.
