Sad end for whale washed up on beach

A NORTHERN bottled-nosed whale died on a Kerry beach yesterday about half an hour after it was washed in on the surf.

More than six metres long, and weighing an estimated 10 tonnes, the huge creature was seen by surfers at Fermoyle beach, in Castlegregory, on the northern side of the Dingle Peninsula, at around 1pm.

The alarm was raised and the Dingle Oceanworld aquarium was contacted. Last Saturday, a three-tonne pilot whale was successfully refloated after being stranded at Inch, on the other side of the peninsula.
