Finding a solution is imperative, says Higgins

LABOUR Party president, Michael D Higgins, yesterday offered support for a series of immigrant demonstrations throughout the US, saying all migrant workers had the right to appropriate protection.

The demonstrations, billed as “a day without immigrants”, are aimed at achieving an amnesty and eventual citizenship for the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants in the US. It is thought that at least 30,000 are Irish.

Yesterday’s march, although not supported by all immigrant groups, is being touted by some as potentially just as significant as the 1960s civil rights marches.
