Suspect vCJD sufferer was blood donor

A MAN being treated in a Dublin hospital for a probable case of variant CJD was a blood donor.

The Irish Blood Transfusion Service (IBTS) said the man, whose suspected case of the degenerative brain disease is awaiting confirmation by the hospital where he is being treated, has previously donated blood, but only once.

The IBTS said there had been two recipients of the blood, one of whom died a short time after of unrelated causes.
