Poverty ‘scourge’ threatens security

POVERTY and alienation are the biggest threats to security in society, the Governor of Mountjoy Prison said yesterday.

John Lonergan said it outweighed the risk from the 1,000 or so serious criminals in the country.

“Poverty is still a scourge in this country. It destroys young people from the day they are born, or even before it,” he said.
